- Ask verbally first to gauge how confidently they answer, then get the key details (quote, registration number, timeframe) confirmed in writing or email before work starts.
- What happens if unlicensed work is done on my house?
- Unlicensed restricted building work, electrical work, or gasfitting can fail council inspections, void your home insurance for related damage, and create serious problems when you try to sell — buyers' solicitors routinely check for compliance documentation.
- Should I ignore a business with a few negative reviews?
- Not necessarily — look at how old the negative reviews are, whether they're a pattern or a one-off, and how the business responded. A single dated negative review with a thoughtful response is far less concerning than several recent, unanswered ones.
- Should I always go with the middle-priced quote?
- Not automatically — it's a reasonable default when the quotes are otherwise similar in scope and the tradesperson checks out on licensing and reviews, but it shouldn't override those checks.
- How does BusinessNZ verify businesses?
